In this web page you have the opportunity to read
many articles about labels…. The coma label, the vegetative
state label (hated by many loving family members who hear it translated
into some languages as “cabbage”), the locked in syndrome
and the brain dead labels.
It seems that we are very concerned
about defining conditions to enable us to provide the right treatment.
However, sometimes labels obscure our ability to see unexpected
behaviour. It cannot be happening because the label says it can’t.
This means that many patients are misdiagnosed or receive the
wrong treatment for their condition.
At ComaCARE
we empathise with those in every condition and the carers and
professionals pushed to make decisions on their behalf.
We encourage carers to have a “beginner’s mind”
and not assume that the label is the person. For every label there
have been exceptions.
