Vision, Mission & Values

Our vision is to allow coma patients maximum opportunity to live their lives as fully as possible and to participate in decision making about their care and status.
Our Mission
ComaCARE aims for its principles to be practiced in mainstream health, social and legal provision in South Africa.
We wish to achieve this through:
- Coma counseling and communication training.
- Advocacy for the best possible coma care provision
- Research – international and local.
- Educating the general public to create an enabling environment for coma work.
We encourage the establishment of other ComaCARE organizations with similar principles.
Our Values
We believe that coma patients have the right to:
- Express their wishes concerning their treatment in advance and while in their coma.
- Receive counseling both before and after their coma.
- Have family members supported and trained in coma communication.
- Decide on their own life and death processes
We foster:
- Acceptance and compassion for all those that try to relate to relate to people in deep, remote states of consciousness.
- The spirit of cooperation with those who are interested in and affected by coma states.
- Humility as learners, with coma patients’ experience being our greatest teacher.
